Cave diving at Vouliagmeni Lake We offer cave diving training and certification along with guided dives for certified cave divers. Our Trimix CCR Cave Instructor and Instructor Trainer is responsible for all diving in the lake and it’s caves. He has an extensive knowledge of the navigational challenges and he provides all the needed logistics for diving in this ancient marvel of nature. Divers need to be appropriately certified for Cavern, Cave or CCR cave Diving and have a valid Divers Medical certificate. Guided cave diving or training is available upon request all year round except August. The Lake Vouliagmeni is a thermal spring cave lake located in Athens Riviera, a hidden treasure of Attica’s nature. Situated on an idyllic landscape, this rare geological phenomenon is waiting to be discovered. The lake’s brackish waters which are continuously replenished both by the sea and the underground thermal springs offer a natural and unique experience to visitors. The Cave At the edge of the lake, starts a labyrinth underwater cave which has been explored at a length of 3,123 metres, while the cave’s end remains elusive and still unexplored. The discovery of a huge stalagmite in the cave has opened up new theories in the research for the formation of the Mediterranean. The size of the main chamber is about 2.000.000 cubic meters, its length reaches 700 meters while only well trained and equipped cave divers can dive for nearly a kilometre exploring the edges of the cave. It has an average depth of 100 meters, 130m was the deepest it has been found and the width of the chamber can reach 80 meters in certain areas. The visibility can be more than 60 meters and cave divers have said that the lights of the divers can be seen from 200 meters distance. The water temperature at the surface of the lake is 21o Celsius in the winter and can reach 29o Celsius in the summer. Inside the cave from 20 meters and deeper the temperature is always 26o-28o Celsius. The water is brackish until 40 meters and deeper it becomes sea water. The exploration of the cave system started in early 80’s by European and American divers and after the 2000’s Greek divers continued the exploration. The cave still holds a lot of secrets and exploration is an ongoing process. Join us on a private off road excursion to Rhodopes mountain range. Our meeting takes place at the Rafting base in Serres. We load things into the jeeps and we follow a route passing the city of Drama and heading to the beautiful Paranesti in the middle of the Rhodopes mountain range next to the Nestos river. Rich vegetation and green scenery! We enjoy a coffee in the village square and a little time to rest before starting to climb towards the Rodopi and Fraktou forest. After a while we leave the lake of Platanovrisi and continue our journey! There were many turns that require careful driving as we pass from Thermia (thermal baths) going uphill. We will enter a dirt track and a little further up we stop for photos. As far as the eye can see wild mountain peaks. We are in the center of the Rhodopes! We go up a little more and enter Frakto forest. We will accommodate on wooden houses where we will prepare and light coals for a delicious barbecue. We get up the next morning and after getting ready we start hiking through the mountain paths to visit four waterfalls and swim in natural pools. Frakto impresses with its beauty! We return at noon to our base, have dinner and take the road back. Stop in Thermia for a bath in the thermal baths. We return to the base in the evening.
